AIZAWL, JULY 26: The Mizo National Front (MNF) has expressed grave concerns about the misuse and non-utilization of central government funds sanctioned for major infrastructure schemes in Mizoram.
The allegations by the opposition party were brought to the fore during a DoNER Consultative Committee meeting, which was organized on Thursday and attended by Northeast Members of Parliament and top government officials.
K. Vanlalvena, the only Rajya Sabha member from Mizoram and MNF member, particularly referred to the suspended repair of the Keitum–N Mualcheng–Zawlsei road in Serchhip district. He disclosed that around ₹200 crore had been approved by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) for the project in the 2023–2024 budget. But although the fund has been allocated, no tangible progress has been observed, leading to speculations that the funds might have been siphoned by the current state government.
The committee has noted the problem and said that it will be probed further in its next session.
To add to the controversy, government representatives brought to notice another case of non-utilization: ₹1,000 lakh sanctioned in April 2025 under the SNA SPARSH Scheme by the Directorate of Fisheries and Animal Husbandry remains unutilized. This inaction on sanctioned funds now threatens the state with a loss of a further ₹700 lakh in future sanctions from the central government.
Against these disclosures, the MNF on Friday called for the white paper release outlining the use of all the central funds approved in April 2025. The party emphasized the imperative to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, particularly when they are meant to fund essential development programs.
The MNF has also urged the central government to step in and see that the funds are utilized efficiently and effectively for the good of the people of Mizoram.
