BOKAJAN, July 31: The Rengma Naga Peoples Council (RNPC) has lauded chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for initiating the eviction of encroachers from the Rengma Reserve Forest in Uriamghat, terming the move a firm and necessary step to restore the ecological sanctity of the region.
In a press release, the RNPC stated that the Rengma Reserve Forest, notified in 1887, was originally established to conserve forest biodiversity and protect the cultural and ecological heritage associated with the Rengma tribe.

While no Rengma families currently reside within the forest area, the forest continues to bear the tribe’s name due to its ancestral and historical significance.
“The RNPC views this eviction initiative as a positive and necessary step towards restoring the forest to its rightful and protected status, free from encroachment and environmental degradation,” the statement read.
The organisation commended the Assam Government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and conserving protected forest areas that had increasingly come under threat from illegal occupation.
The RNPC expressed optimism that the Rengma Reserve Forest will now have the opportunity to recover and thrive as a vital ecological zone, in line with the vision behind its original declaration.
The organisation also extended its gratitude to the district administration, forest department, and all officials involved in executing the eviction drive, and conveyed deep appreciation to the chief minister for his decisive intervention.
