JORHAT, Aug 5: A book titled “Asom aru Ahom”, chronicling the migration of the Ta Chans—later known as the Tai Ahoms in Assam—from a Chinese province in 220 BC to the establishment of the Ahom kingdom in 1838, was released at Assam Women’s University here on Tuesday.
The book, authored by Dr Sumendra Nath Buragohain, a retired Principal Scientist of the Central Silk Board, was formally released by Prof Nirode Boruah, Vice-Chancellor of Majuli University of Culture and a noted educationist and historian.
The function was presided over by Kamal Jyoti Gogoi, former secretary of the erstwhile Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).
Prof Boruah, in his address, said the book presents a comprehensive account of the Tai-Ahom migration and the founding of the Ahom kingdom by Swargadeo Chaolung Siu-Ka-Pha in the 13th century.
He added that the volume also sheds light on the tribes and communities present in the region during that period and would serve as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars.
The event was organised by a committee constituted earlier this year to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Siu-Ka-Pha’s arrival in Assam in 2028.
Speaking at the function, Dr Buragohain said the nearly 700-page book is the outcome of six years of research, including visits to several Southeast Asian countries.
He said the narrative begins with the Ta Chans’ migration from the Huang He valley in 220 BC, tracing their journey across modern-day countries before reaching Assam and establishing the Ahom kingdom.
The book also documents the migration of other groups from mainland India and local tribes of Assam.
The book is dedicated to the Ahom soldiers who laid down their lives in the Battle of Alaboi against Mughal forces on August 5, 1669.
Its release coincided with the anniversary of the battle.
Among those present were Assam Women’s University Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar, journalist Rajdeep Bailung Baruah, Rajkumar Alok Narayan Singha of the Ahom royal family, writer and academic Dr Debabrata Sharma, AWU Registrar Tapan Gohain, scientist Dr Ramesh Boruah, and Inspector of Schools Buli Gogoi Bhuyan.
Earlier, Indrajit Bezbaruah, working president of the organising committee, delivered the welcome address, and general secretary Jayanta Pator outlined the aims and objectives of the programme.
