GUWAHATI, AUGUST 8: In a shocking incident that was reported late on August 3, Guwahati police arrested two people on Thursday night for their role in attacking two security guards outside a bar at the Zoo Road area. The skirmish occurred in the parking lot of the Times Square Complex and was allegedly initiated by a petty traffic-related dispute that snowballed into a violent struggle.

The two arrested suspects are Pratul Ramchiyari of Fatasil Ambari and Luhit Kakoty of Duliajan. Eyewitnesses and reports say the altercation started when a red Swift vehicle bumped one of the security guards in charge of traffic control lightly. When the driver was questioned by the guard—supposedly in Hindi—the car group, consisting of both men and women, responded aggressively, apparently misunderstanding the guard to be an outsider based on his language.

“Girlfriend of one of the girls who were in the car began abusing me,” Maiham Hasnu, who was also among the victims, recalled. “They soon got down from the car and started beating me. Even the girl joined in and assaulted me physically.” Hasnu and fellow guard Michael Nunisa, both from Karbi Anglong district, are students-turned-security-guards in Guwahati to aid their families. Both were injured during the attack and are said to be emotionally traumatized, seeking justice for the attack.

A video of the event, however, has since become viral on the social media, showing the group kicking and punching the guards. In a desperate bid to conceal their identification, the accused had deactivated their Instagram accounts moments after the incident. The outcry from the public after the video was released led to immediate action by Dispur Police, who stepped up their investigation and were successful in arresting two suspects. Efforts to identify and arrest other suspects in the assault are underway. The case is under active investigation.
