MARGHERITA, Sept 7: In a powerful display of unity and resolve, Margherita town in Tinsukia district was illuminated by a massive torchlight procession on Friday evening.
The event was organised by the All Moran Student Union and other umbrella organisations from the Moran community, with over 10,000 participants marching from Margherita Eco Park to Segunbari Chariali, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and an Autonomous Council under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution.
The air resonated with slogans such as “BJP Government Go Back,” “Himanta Biswa Sarma Liar,” and “BJP Government’s Deception Won’t Work.”
The demonstrators, undeterred by police barriers, temporarily disrupted Margherita NH 315 by holding torches and placards as they voiced their determination to secure their long-overdue rights.
Led by the All Moran Student Union and supported by various Moran community organisations, the protest underscored the community’s frustration with the unfulfilled promises of the BJP-led governments at both the Union and State levels.
Joykanta Moran, General Secretary of the All Moran Student Union, addressed the gathering and declared, “The BJP-led government has repeatedly deceived the Moran community with empty assurances on ST status. This time, we will not settle for promises as we are Indigenous people and shall intensify our agitation until our demands for ST status and an Autonomous Council under the 6th Schedule are met.”
The procession marks the beginning of a series of planned demonstrations.
The All Moran Student Union announced that another grand torchlight procession will be held in Tinsukia Sadar on September 10, followed by an indefinite economic blockade starting September 15, as part of their efforts to press for their demands.
The march highlighted the Moran community’s unity and determination, serving as a call for justice and recognition that resonated beyond Margherita. The procession stands as a testament to the community’s spirit and pursuit of empowerment.
