NAMSAI, Sept 18: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Namsai, on Thursday conducted a mock exercise simulating an earthquake scenario to test the district’s preparedness and response mechanism.

The exercise was carried out simultaneously at five identified sites—Government Secondary School Namsai, Mini Secretariat Office, District Hospital, Old Market, and the residential area near Emma Hotel.

The drill was designed to assess the readiness of various line departments, first responders, and stakeholders in the event of a major earthquake.

As part of the exercise, rescue operations, evacuation drills, medical response, and inter-agency coordination were demonstrated to replicate a real-time disaster situation.

Officials said the mock exercise not only provided hands-on experience for emergency personnel but also highlighted areas where improvements in coordination and response may be required.

“Such drills are crucial in preparing our teams to handle large-scale emergencies effectively,” one senior officer remarked.

Local residents also took part in the exercise, observing and engaging in the preparedness activities. Their involvement, officials noted, was instrumental in spreading awareness of safety measures to be followed before, during, and after an earthquake.

The DDMA expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the exercise, adding that similar initiatives would continue to be organised periodically to strengthen disaster resilience in Namsai district.
