Guwahati, Oct 06: The Assam government has unveiled a new initiative to ensure that individuals from the state who pass away outside Assam can return home with dignity on Monday, 6 October. The ‘Shraddhanjali Scheme’, launched at Lok Sewa Bhawan, Dispur, is now fully detailed on the Seva Setu portal.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the scheme on X, stating:
“From now on, sons and daughters of Assam who pass away due to unforeseen circumstances outside the State will have a dignified farewell in their motherland. We are launching the #Shraddhanjali scheme to ensure dignified repatriation of the deceased.”

The programme is designed to support families during the difficult process of repatriation, providing timely assistance and removing financial or logistical burdens. This year, prior to the formal launch, authorities had already facilitated the return of 24 individuals.
The scheme primarily targets students, professionals, and others travelling abroad or outside Assam. It excludes cases where individuals travel for medical treatment and are financially able to cover their own expenses.
In the event of accidents or unnatural deaths requiring legal procedures, Assam Police will extend necessary support, including the possible deployment of officers outside the state to assist grieving families.
