DBT-APSCS&T CoE for BRSD organises symposium in Ziro to advance bioinformatics and computational biology in healthcare research

ZIRO, Oct 8: The DBT-APSCS&T Centre of Excellence for Bioresources and Sustainable Development (CoE for BRSD), Kimin, successfully organized a symposium on “Emerging Trends in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology for Healthcare Practices” at the Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University (IGTAMSU), Ziro, on Wednesday.

The event is part of a series of awareness programmes being conducted by the CoE for BRSD across its centres in Kimin, Pasighat, and Namsai, aimed at promoting the application of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in biological research and healthcare innovation in Arunachal Pradesh.

The inaugural session began with a welcome address and programme overview by Dr Debashis Panda, Scientist-B, DBT-APSCS&T CoE for BRSD, Kimin.

He highlighted the immense potential of these emerging disciplines in advancing high-throughput research on the state’s diverse bioresources.

Dr Siddharth Shankar, Vice Chancellor of IGTAMSU, Ziro, who graced the occasion as the guest of honour, lauded the efforts of the CoE for BRSD in promoting scientific learning and awareness.

He encouraged students to take full advantage of the symposium to expand their technical knowledge and research capabilities.

The technical sessions featured expert lectures from distinguished scientists.

In the first session, Dr Debashis Panda presented on “Basic and Advanced Applications of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology in Healthcare Practices,” explaining how computational tools are transforming biomedical research and diagnostics.

The second session featured a keynote address by Dr Mangala Hegde from the Cancer Biology Laboratory, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.

Dr Hegde spoke on Medical and Translational Biotechnology, elaborating on cancer biology and the molecular mechanisms driving cancer cell proliferation.

The symposium saw enthusiastic participation from students of Government Higher Secondary School, Hija, Frontier School, and undergraduate students and faculty members from IGTAMSU.

In total, 99 students and 7 faculty members from Ziro and surrounding areas attended the event, gaining valuable exposure to modern computational approaches in life sciences and healthcare research.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Bidyananda Singh, Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, IGTAMSU, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, speakers, and participants for making the symposium a success.

Reaffirming its commitment to scientific advancement, the DBT-APSCS&T CoE for BRSD stated that it will continue to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, capacity building, and sustainable bioresource research for the holistic development of Arunachal Pradesh.
