KIMIN, July 5: In a landmark visit aimed at reinforcing the state’s focus on science-led sustainable development, Tage Taki, Chairman of the Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science & Technology (APSCS&T), undertook his first official tour of the DBT-APSCS&T Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Bioresources and Sustainable Development at Kimin.
He was accompanied by Er CD Mungyak, Director-cum-Member Secretary of APSCS&T.
According to an official statement, the visit marked a significant milestone in the promotion of research, innovation, and resource-based economic development in Arunachal Pradesh. Taki was warmly received at the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Conference Hall, where Project Director Dr Debajit Mahanta and his team of scientists presented a detailed overview of the Centre’s ongoing initiatives and strategic vision.
The Centre of Excellence, a first-of-its-kind facility under any State Science & Technology Council in the North Eastern Region, is at the forefront of harnessing the state’s immense biodiversity for scientific research and the development of sustainable livelihoods.
The project is supported under the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and focuses on areas such as conservation biology, medicinal and aromatic plants, microbial bioresources, indigenous germplasm, and bioinformatics.
During the tour, Taki inspected the Centre’s state-of-the-art laboratories and interacted directly with researchers to understand the scientific progress and challenges in realising the CoE’s vision.
He also visited the Orchidarium, which serves as a key site for the conservation and study of Arunachal Pradesh’s rich orchid biodiversity.
The Chairman praised the facility’s multi-disciplinary approach and its alignment with both environmental stewardship and economic advancement.
“The future lies in harnessing our natural wealth through science and innovation. Arunachal Pradesh, with its unparalleled bioresources, is poised to lead this movement in the North-East,” he stated during his address to the scientific community.
Taki further underscored the importance of translating lab-based research into practical, market-ready solutions that contribute to self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and rural development.
He called on the Centre to accelerate efforts toward the development of value-added products and services that could be commercialised within the next two years.
“Our youth deserve opportunities to build careers in science and green entrepreneurship. Centres like this must be at the forefront of that effort,” he remarked.
The Chairman also commended the vision of his predecessor in establishing the Centre in Kimin, describing the location as “serene and scientifically conducive” for high-quality research.
He lauded the dedication of the scientific staff and encouraged them to continue pushing the frontiers of knowledge while also engaging local communities in conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Gyamar Reeta, accounts officer, who reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to scientific innovation and inclusive development.
She noted that the CoE would continue to work in close coordination with stakeholders across sectors to unlock the potential of Arunachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity for long-term ecological and economic benefits.
The visit has further bolstered the state government’s resolve to position Arunachal Pradesh as a leading hub for bioresource-based innovation and sustainable development in the Northeast region.
