Gohain, a four-time MP from Nagaon and former BJP state president, also served as Minister of State for Railways during the first term of the Modi government in 2016. He has been associated with the BJP since 1991 and represented the Nowgong constituency, now Nagaon, in Parliament from 1999 to 2019.

Gohain cited differences over the delimitation of the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency as a key reason for his resignation, claiming discussions with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not yield any solution.

Earlier, he resigned in 2023 as chairman of the Assam Food and Civil Supplies Corporation in protest against the delimitation, warning that it would make the seat “unwinnable” for BJP candidates. Gohain said he felt “betrayed and almost disrespected” as his concerns were not addressed by party leadership despite being a senior member.
