Jagiroad College observes World Food Day

JAGIROAD, Oct 16: The Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with the IQAC of Jagiroad College, celebrated World Food Day 2025 with around 100 students from Science, Arts, and Commerce streams participating actively. The global theme for this year was “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.”

The program began with an introductory address by Anamika Sikdar, a B Sc Chemistry student, who highlighted the importance of World Food Day. Dr Gopi Adhikari, Head of the Chemistry Department, spoke on food adulteration and food safety, emphasising the need for pure and nutritious food. He also cautioned against spending on fast foods like chowmein, burgers, and fried snacks, which are often unhealthy and costly.

Associate Professor Subrata Pal from the Botany Department stressed the importance of a balanced diet, focusing on proteins and carbohydrates essential for growth and energy. He encouraged consumption of natural, colorful foods and warned against processed and artificially coloured foods.

Dr Utpal Rajguru of the Zoology Department urged students to avoid junk food and carbonated drinks, explaining the long-term health risks of poor dietary choices.

Dr Chitta Ranjan Sarkar, Associate Professor of Chemistry and IQAC Coordinator, shared the Vedic concept of “Annam Brahma” (food is divine) reminding attendees that food is essential for life and strength. He referenced the Mahabharata’s story of Lord Krishna choosing simple, healthy food over royal dishes, highlighting that true value lies in food’s purity and nourishment, not its price.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Arup Biswas, a B Sc Chemistry student, successfully promoting awareness about better food and a healthier future.
