Lakhimpur , 23 Oct : Residents of Bhitoripam village, located along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Lakhimpur district, are spending sleepless nights as wild elephants continue to wreak havoc in the area every night. The elephants descend from the nearby hills after dusk, entering the village and destroying homes, gardens, and crops.
According to villagers, the rampaging herd has been uprooting areca nut, banana, and pineapple plants, causing heavy damage to both property and livelihood. Despite repeated appeals, the Forest Department has allegedly taken no effective steps to control the menace. Locals say the elephants are now coming dangerously close to human settlements, feeding on paddy fields and trampling anything in their path.
Although a forest camp exists at Bhitoripam, residents complain that the two guards stationed there remain inactive, offering no help when the elephants strike at night. The villagers accuse the forest authorities of negligence and have expressed anger over their inaction.
The affected residents have demanded that the number of forest personnel be increased in the border area and that proper safety measures be put in place to protect both people and crops. Over the past few years, several lives have been lost due to wild elephant attacks in this region, making the need for immediate intervention all the more urgent.
