MARGHERITA, Oct 28: The historic 127-year-old Bishuddhachar Buddha Vihar in Namdang Gaon, under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency, has been magnificently reconstructed and inaugurated, marking a celebration of faith, heritage and community spirit.
The inauguration held on Monday, featured a grand flag hoisting, Pay Bo, Daratham, Sangha Dana offerings and a procession with the revered Buddha statue and the symbolic Kalpataru. The reconstructed Vihar was formally inaugurated by Gyanopal Mahathero, president of the All Assam Buddhist Association and head monk of Namphake Buddha Vihar. Devotees and Buddhist monks from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh attended in large numbers.

A tribute was also paid to Assam’s musical legend Zubeen Garg with the unveiling of his portrait, adding a cultural touch to the religious festivities.
Founded in 1898 by Sukhram Wakhet on the banks of the Buridehing River, the Vihar was later relocated to Namdang Gaon due to erosion. The reconstruction was led by Jyotika Mahathera, head of Ledo Maulang Khamti Buddhist Monastery, in collaboration with the Shailen Wakhet family.
The All Assam Buddhist Association, Tinsukia district committee, felicitated Gyanopal Mahathero, Jyotika Mahathera and the Wakhet family for their contributions to reviving this cultural and spiritual landmark.
The two-day celebration continues with Anikaja Tang, Daratham and other Buddhist religious events, further enriching the spiritual heritage of the region.
