GUWAHATI, Oct 31: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the newly built Lakhimpur Nursing College under the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF) and performed the bhoomipujan for a Super-Specialty Hospital in Lakhimpur. On the occasion, he paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birth anniversary.
The Lakhimpur Nursing College is the first B Sc Nursing institution on the north bank of the Brahmaputra and the second under ACCF, following Barpeta. The college aims to enhance Assam’s healthcare system by producing skilled nurses, particularly for cancer care. CM Sarma highlighted plans to establish a B Sc Nursing College alongside each of the 17 upcoming cancer hospitals in the state and another nursing college at Lakhimpur Medical College offering B Sc and M Sc courses.

The Chief Minister noted the growing demand for healthcare professionals, both within India and abroad, citing opportunities for Assamese nurses in countries like Singapore, Japan and South Korea. To support international placements, the government launched the Chief Minister’s Foreign Language Initiative for Global Human Resources (CM-FLIGHT), including Japanese language training centers in Guwahati.
CM Sarma also outlined developments in Assam’s healthcare infrastructure, including new super-specialty hospitals by Medanta and Max groups and upcoming civil hospitals in Narayanpur and Dhakuakhana. The proposed Lakhimpur Super-Specialty Hospital will cost nearly Rs 300 crore, with six major departments, ICUs and modern facilities, expected to be completed within three years.
The Chief Minister emphasised Lakhimpur’s transformation into a major hub for education and healthcare, citing the establishment of medical colleges, Madhabdev University, North Lakhimpur University and a campus of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Gogamukh. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, MP Pradan Baruah, MLAs Manab Deka, Amiya Kumar Bhuyan, Naba Kumar Doley and other dignitaries attended the event.
