AAUBC observes raising day

SIVASAGAR, Nov 1: The All Assam United Brahmin Council (AAUBC) observed its third raising day at the Amolapatty Hindu Dharma Namghar in Sivasagar on Friday, with participation from district units of Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Charaideo and others.

The secretary of AAUBC, Gopal Pandey, outlined the objectives of the meeting, which was addressed by several dignitaries including Amarjyoti Borthakur, Anup Kumar Goswami (president, Jorhat district AAUBC), Dr Utpal Sharma and Dr Siddhartha Sharma (president and secretary, Dibrugarh district unit), Dulal Chandra Sharma (secretary, Charaideo district unit), Mathura Goswami (former vice president, Asom Brahman Sabha), Arabinda Baruah, Debabrat Borthakur and AAUBC treasurer and spokesperson Amrit Kr Goswami. It was highlighted that the AAUBC has expanded its work of uniting Brahmins across 23 districts within three years.

Anup Kumar Goswami urged that the use of the term ‘Bamun’ in a derogatory manner should be strongly protested. Dr Utpal Sharma emphasised that the Brahmin community must strive to revive the virtues for which their forefathers were once respected. A message from AAUBC president Manoj Kumar Borthakur, who could not attend the event, was read out by Dr Moni Pathak.

Earlier in the day, the dharmadwajja was hoisted by executive president Promod Chandra Goswami, followed by smriti tarpan performed by Amarjyoti Borthakur, former principal of Amguri Auniati HS School. In his address, Borthakur called for unity among all Brahmins under one platform. Pandit Umesh Pandey recited mangalcharan slokas. The gathering also paid heartfelt tributes to the late singer-composer Zubeen Garg before the proceedings began.

A new Sivasagar district committee of the AAUBC was formed with Dr Prakash Kotoky, Brajen Sharma, Dr Panchanan Borthakur and Dr Abony Sharma as advisers, Rajendranath Borthakur as president, Rajani Changkakoti as executive president; and Raman Sharma, Bakul Borthakur, Dr Pratim Sharma, Rohini Sharma, Bharat Sharma, and Dr Arunjyoti Changkakoti as vice presidents. Ratna Moni Sharma was appointed treasurer, while Sanju Baruah took charge as secretary.

The newly formed women’s council of AAUBC was also introduced, with Ruma Goswami as president, Sandhya Goswami as executive president, Bina Phukan, Mridusmita Rajguru and Anu Goswami as vice presidents and Sandhya Sharma as secretary.
