Tezpur, Novo 4 Students, teachers, and staff of Tezpur University have expressed concern that the university is heading toward a financial collapse due to mismanagement and misuse of its internal revenue generation (IRG) funds. In this context, they staged a unique protest today — by holding empty plates in their hands.
It may be noted that protests demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Shambhunath Singh have been continuing for nearly one and a half months. As part of the ongoing evening protest program, today’s demonstration took a symbolic turn with this innovative form of protest.
A few days earlier, students had taken their protest against the controversial Vice-Chancellor to the legal front. Today evening, both students and faculty members, along with staff, demonstrated within the university premises holding empty plates in their hands.
The protest, centered on the themes “Zero Commitment, Zero Support, and Zero Solution,” was intended to symbolize these three aspects through the act of holding empty plates.
According to recent allegations, the controversial Vice-Chancellor Shambhunath Singh, already embroiled in various corruption charges, has allegedly exhausted several crores of rupees from the university’s IRG fund without proper justification. It is alleged that these funds were spent on unnecessary renovations — including the Vice-Chancellor’s residence, swimming pool, and the university’s guest house in Guwahati — instead of being used for student facilities and essential academic needs.
Protesters have accused Vice-Chancellor Singh of pushing the university toward bankruptcy by misusing the IRG funds, which are supposed to be used only during emergency situations. Despite this restriction, he is alleged to have recklessly spent a large amount of money, ignoring financial prudence and the needs of the student community.
