Tezpur, Nov 04: Tezpur and its surrounding areas have been witnessing an alarming rise in the supply of drugs and ganja, prompting continuous police operations to curb the menace. However, despite the ongoing crackdown, new groups continue to attempt to smuggle and distribute these harmful substances.

According to police sources, even though many individuals involved in the trafficking of drugs and ganja have been arrested and sent to judicial custody through the courts, several of them return to the same illegal activities soon after being released on bail.

It may be noted that to prevent the frequent supply of drugs from Nagaon to Tezpur and its nearby regions, Tezpur police have been conducting regular search operations near the Kaliabhomora Bridge connecting Tezpur and Nagaon. During these operations, police have arrested several traffickers and seized significant quantities of drugs.

In areas like Borghat and Bhojkhowa, police have also apprehended multiple suppliers along with drugs, and it has now come to light that women are increasingly becoming involved in such illegal activities.

Notably, within the last three months, police operations in Tezpur have led to the arrest of three women drug peddlers. According to the latest police report, on October 31, a woman named Safiya Begum (40) from Porua Bhitorsuti was arrested with over six kilograms of ganja in an operation led by Tezpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bhaskarjyoti Bezbaruah.

Earlier, police had arrested another woman named Rupa Begum from Bihaguri Likhak Gaon with over 15 kilograms of ganja, and yet another woman named Sujit Dutta was caught with heroin.

Similarly, several incidents of drug smuggling and illegal trade have been exposed through police raids not only in Tezpur but also in nearby areas such as Thelamara, Dhekiajuli, Chariduar, and Balipara, among others.

Recently, on November 1, police recovered 40 plastic containers containing suspected heroin from the house of Irajul Islam (28) at Borjuli. Following the investigation, police arrested five more accused individuals — Dibyajyoti Mes (29) of New Kalibari, Abhijit Ghosh (24) of Uriamguri, Rahul Raj (25) of Balichapori, Pranjit Rajput (21) of Gereki, and Sagar Shah (19) of Gereki.

Although Tezpur police continue their operations against the widespread use and supply of drugs and ganja — which have alarmingly spread among a large section of the youth — the situation is further worsened by parental negligence and a tendency among some families to overlook or conceal such behavior, contributing to the deepening of this grave social crisis.
