Tezpur, Nov 07: The patriotic spirit resonated across Tezpur on Friday, November 7, as people came together to mark the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, the timeless song penned by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay — a symbol of nationalism and unity.
Organised by the Sonitpur District Administration in collaboration with Sonitpur Police, a collective rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ was held at the Police Reserve auditorium in Tezpur. The event began at 10 am, bringing together officials, students, and citizens in a harmonious tribute to the nation.
Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das delivered the welcome address, while Tezpur MLA Prithviraj Rabha graced the event as chief guest. In his speech, Rabha highlighted that Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay composed ‘Vande Mataram’ in 1875, and the song later became a source of inspiration for India’s freedom fighters. He added that it was eventually recognised as the national song after the country’s independence.
Before the main event, students from Tezpur Sacred Heart School and members of Sonitpur Police performed a band rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ outside the auditorium, spreading a wave of patriotism among the crowd. Senior government officials, prominent citizens, and police officers from across the district also attended the event, reaffirming the enduring unity and spirit of the anthem that continues to inspire generations.
