Duwahati, Nov 07: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called on Assam’s young innovators and entrepreneurs to seize the state’s industrial momentum during her visit to the upcoming semiconductor manufacturing site in Jagiroad.
The interactive session brought together over 34 startups and students from eight districts, creating a dialogue between the Finance Minister and emerging business leaders. Sitharaman highlighted Assam’s pioneering role in hosting the Northeast’s first semiconductor unit, praising the collaborative effort of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Tata Group. “Assam has created an environment that encourages investment and industrial growth. This initiative is a testament to vision and execution,” she said.
The Minister underlined the broader significance of the project for the region. “Many parts of India have not seen such large-scale industries established. This unit is not just for Assam; it is an opportunity for the entire Northeast,” she noted.
Students raised questions about talent return from overseas and access to research funding. Sitharaman confirmed that several Indian professionals had voluntarily returned to contribute to the semiconductor project, citing Tata’s credibility and professional ethos. She also detailed the ₹1 lakh crore Research and Development fund recently launched by the central government, available to public institutions, private enterprises, and startups.
Encouraging youth engagement with innovation hubs, Sitharaman pointed to IIT Guwahati as a bridge between academia and industry. “Integration among IITs and research centres is generating energy. Students should leverage these connections to transform ideas into viable ventures,” she said.
Startups seeking financial support were assured of access to central funds, with Sitharaman offering to directly facilitate connections for early-stage enterprises.
Concluding her address, the Finance Minister urged young entrepreneurs to move beyond traditional salaried careers. “Assam has a golden moment. This semiconductor unit will drive local entrepreneurship, innovation, and self-reliance. Step forward with confidence and contribute to India’s growth,” she said.
