GUWAHATI, Nov 11: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday inaugurated a newly constructed Railway Overbridge on the road connecting Raha to Chaparmukh Railway Junction and West Karbi Anglong.
The bridge, built at a cost of Rs 84.6 crore, spans a total length of 1.179 km and is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Nagaon and West Karbi Anglong districts.
The inauguration took place in the presence of minister Piyush Hazarika, Raha MLA Sashikanta Das, Divisional Railway Manager (Lumding) Sameer Lohaney, and several senior officials.
The bridge is part of the State Government’s push to strengthen road and transport infrastructure across Assam, ensuring smoother inter-district movement and better access to key railway facilities.
Earlier in the day, chief minister Sarma distributed cheques worth Rs 10,000 each to 37,833 women beneficiaries under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) for Raha Legislative Assembly Constituency.
The disbursement, amounting to nearly Rs 40 crore, marks one of the highest beneficiary counts under the scheme in the state.
Addressing the gathering at Raha, Sarma said the MMUA aims to transform Assam’s women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) into strong social and economic units.
He announced that upon proper utilization of the seed fund, beneficiaries will receive additional instalments of Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 in subsequent phases.
The chief minister further announced that 4,000 new families in Raha Constituency will be added under the Orunodoi Scheme.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, the eradication of child marriage, and the introduction of a new law to prevent polygamy, which will be tabled in the Assembly on November 25.
