JORHAT, April 2: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated three major projects, with a total cost of Rs 110.77 crore, in Jorhat district.
The projects include the Railway Overbridge on Komarbondha Road, an Automated Vehicle Fitness Testing Centre, and the Jorhat Convention Centre.
Sarma first inaugurated the Convention Centre (Sanmilan Bhawan), built under the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund at a cost of Rs 19.98 crore in Cinnamara. The centre has a seating capacity of 120 and includes a meeting room.
The Convention Centre spans a total area of 5 bighas (approximately 1.66 acres) and has a built-up area of 3,118 sq. m. It comprises one executive room, a media room, an entrance hall, a dining room, two presidential suites, and five suite rooms.
Speaking on the occasion, Sarma said that the opening of the centre would greatly benefit the district administration and the people of Jorhat by providing a venue for various functions.
“This state-of-the-art convention centre will undoubtedly add a new dimension to the modern urban infrastructure of the district,” he added.
The chief minister then inaugurated the first Automated Vehicle Fitness Testing Centre in Upper Assam, and the second in the state.
“The Automated Vehicle Fitness Testing Station, inspired by advanced countries, will play a crucial role in making the Prime Minister’s vision of Digital India a reality,” Sarma remarked.
The centre, inaugurated on Wednesday, is one of five advanced technology centres set up under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Corporation and the Spanish company, Applus Iteuve India, under a public-private partnership.
Sarma further stated that the automated testing station at the Inter-State Bus Terminal, a significant infrastructure for Assam, marks the beginning of a new era. The automated testing centre will serve four districts—Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo—and was constructed at a cost of Rs 12.5 crore.
This testing facility will provide a reliable system for vehicle suitability certification for Jorhat and its neighboring districts. Built with state-of-the-art technology, the centre is fully automated, efficient, and safe, ensuring accurate certification of vehicles in a short time, thus contributing to accident prevention and road safety.
Additionally, the chief minister also inaugurated a second railway overbridge in the district.
The two-lane overbridge, located on the northeastern railway line, stretches from near Jorhat Medical College on the north side of Kamarbandha Ali to near the gate of Mission Hospital on the south side. This project will improve connectivity between Jorhat city and neighboring Golaghat district.
“There is heavy traffic on both sides of the railway gate, and passengers often suffer while waiting in long queues. This project will greatly benefit patients from far and wide, enabling them to reach vital healthcare facilities in Jorhat such as the Jorhat Medical College, Jorhat Cancer Care Centre, Mission Hospital, and various educational institutions including Assam Agricultural University,” the CM added.
The project will also improve accessibility to Rowriah Airport for both tourists and regular passengers.
Sarma added that the bridge will facilitate tourists visiting the ambitious Freedom Movement Park under construction at the Jorhat Central Jail.
The flyover was constructed at a total cost of Rs 78.27 crore, shared equally between the state government’s funds and the Railway Department during the 2020-21 fiscal year. Work on the main section of the flyover commenced in January 2022 and was completed in March 2025, despite facing several challenges.
The flyover has a total length of 581.20 meters, with a 74-meter section above the railway line.
On the occasion, Sarma announced that Jagannath Barooah College will soon become a university, with a vice chancellor set to be appointed in April.
He further announced plans for a second railway overbridge at Lahoty and another bridge over the Bhogdoi River.
Speaking further the chief minister emphasised the state’s continuous progress in development.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country and the state have achieved unprecedented development in various sectors such as socio-culture, sports, economy, communication systems, and ensuring equal dignity and development for people from all walks of life. The Prime Minister’s strong leadership is the key to the ongoing infrastructure development in every corner of the country and the state,” he said.
“We are planning to elevate Assam to the peak of development as a symbol of modern dynamism, and in the coming days, we will bring even more opportunities to the people of Jorhat. I would also like to thank Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami for his invaluable contribution to the district’s development. The district is better planned than ever and will continue to progress,” he added.
