GUWAHATI, Nov 12: In the wake of singer Zubeen Garg’s death and the recent blast in Delhi, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged the people of Assam to take collective responsibility in preserving the late artist’s legacy, calling it a moral and cultural duty of every Assamese.
Sarma said that many citizens had reminded him that the task of keeping the cultural icon’s memory alive rests solely with the Assamese community. He noted how, during Durga Puja, Raas and Lakshmi Puja celebrations, several Hindu households across the state displayed Zubeen Garg’s photographs at pandals as a mark of respect.
However, he pointed out that such gestures were absent during Muslim congregations like Ijtema, which are also considered religious assemblies or “Dharma Sabhas.”
“This clearly shows that only the Assamese people — those who feel an emotional bond with Zubeen Garg’s art and his ideals — can truly keep his legacy alive,” Sarma said, adding that individuals driven by suspicion or sectarian views cannot honour the artist’s spirit.
The Chief Minister reiterated his appeal for peace and unity, urging citizens to reject divisive ideologies and reaffirm their cultural roots. “Zubeen Garg symbolised the emotions and aspirations of every Assamese. Preserving his legacy means preserving the soul of Assam,” Sarma said.
