KOKRAJHAR, Nov 15: Bodoland University successfully hosted a two-day National Seminar on “Women, Culture and Empowerment: Weaving Sustainability and Identity,” jointly organised by the Departments of English, Biotechnology, Management Studies, Bodo and the Centre for Women Studies in collaboration with Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati. The seminar was supported by the North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of DONER, Government of India, under Project EMWSSAA.
The inaugural session featured a welcome dance by students, the ceremonial lamp lighting and addresses by Dr Zothanchhingi Khiangte (Convenor), Prof Pradip Kumar Patra and keynote speaker Prof Jyotirmoy Pradhani. A special musical performance by Prof Ayekpam Ibemcha Chanu and Dr Arabinda Debnath added a cultural dimension to the ceremony.
The seminar included presentations on diverse topics, such as women’s agency in Sikkim (Dr. Charisma Lepcha), health and empowerment in Assam (Dr Abigail Lalnueng) and indigenous textiles (Dr Preetinicha Barman). Day two featured plenary and online sessions on economic empowerment, cultural heritage, institutional development and women’s movements, along with methodological lectures on quantitative and ethnographic research.
The event concluded with interactive discussions, providing a dynamic platform for scholars and researchers to explore women’s contributions to cultural preservation, economic empowerment and identity-building, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on sustainable development in Northeast India.
