The Election Commission of India on Nov 17 ordered a Special Revision of Assam’s electoral rolls, setting the groundwork for the state’s assembly elections due next year. The directive, sent to the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, confirmed that Jan 1, 2026 will be the qualifying date for the revision, signalling the Commission’s focus on cleaning up the voter list before the crucial polls.

This Special Revision fits between the annual summary revision and the upcoming Special Intensive Revision, making it a key step to update entries, add new voters and eliminate errors. The exercise comes at a time when Assam gears up for a politically charged year, with voter data accuracy being one of the most searched and discussed topics across the region.
Last month, the ECI rolled out the Special Intensive Revision for Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Puducherry, and the Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep. Among these, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry and West Bengal are also heading to polls in 2026, making the revision process even more significant in the national electoral calendar.
The Commission will issue a separate notification for Assam’s Special Intensive Revision soon, which is expected to outline door-to-door verification, disposal of claims and objections, and other voter list correction measures. With updated rolls emerging as a trending keyword ahead of the elections, all eyes are on how the revision will shape Assam’s political landscape in the months to come.
