GUWAHATI, Nov 18: Momentum is building for Assam’s upcoming museum project as the British Museum and the state government move a step closer to bringing a rare textile to Guwahati. A fresh Letter of Intent, signed between the two sides, sets out how the loan of the artefact—catalogued as As1905,0118.4—will take shape once the new facility is ready to meet global standards.
The document lays out the expectations clearly. The British Museum will release the textile only after Assam’s museum confirms proper infrastructure, environmental controls and robust security systems. Given the textile’s sensitivity to light, experts have already projected a short display span of three to six months from 2027, with exact dates to be settled in a later agreement.

The Letter of Intent also notes that Assam must secure funding for every stage of the loan process, including transport, insurance, conservation and handling. Either the state government or an approved third party will have to underwrite the full set of costs before the object can travel.
Though the agreement is not legally binding, it becomes effective immediately and will remain valid for two years or until a formal contract is signed. Officials say the document reflects both sides’ intention to advance cultural cooperation and eventually bring the historic textile to Guwahati for public viewing and research.
