TEZPUR, Nov 18: Tezpur observed Nov 18 with deep emotion as residents remembered beloved singer Zubeen Garg on his 53rd birthday. The town turned vibrant early in the morning as Tezpur Zubeenian organised a grand cultural rally at Nehru Maidan, where nearly five thousand students and locals marched through the streets chanting “Joy Zubeen Da”, filling the city with an echo of admiration and longing.
The rally, led by Tezpur Zubeenian and The Social Organisation, saw participation from cultural artistes including Richa Bharadwaj along with performers from across the region. Students from various schools and colleges joined the vibrant procession to pay their respects, raising slogans seeking justice and celebrating the legacy of the iconic artiste.
On the same day, the Sonitpur district unit of the BJP organised two “Jeevan Surabhi” blood donation camps at Tezpur Tarun Asom Sangha and Nadiwar Barechoria Bhaona Project. The Asom Gana Parishad’s Sonitpur district committee also observed the day as National Self-Respect Day, hosting programmes at the district office and the Hem Barua Smriti Bhawan. Local MLA Prithviraj Rabha, party vice-president Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, district president Ratul Kumar Nath and Tezpur Municipal Board chairman Ramen Tamuli lit lamps and offered floral tribute to Zubeen’s portrait before a devotional dihanam performance by Usha Pragati Mahila Dihanam group.
At the memorial meeting, leaders and well-wishers opened the event by playing 13 of Zubeen’s songs. Environmentalist Dr Harendranath Moran, Bhaban Medhi, Bhaskar Patangia, Navin Lohkar and Dwijen Nath were felicitated with certificates, gamusas and cheleng chadors. Cultural worker and Zubeen’s close friend Kajal Borah shared heartfelt memories of the artiste.
Meanwhile, the Assam Youth Organisation and All Assam Students’ Union held a blood donation camp at Kanaklata Civil Hospital where 30 donors participated, followed by a tree-plantation drive across historical sites. As evening fell, 53 lamps were lit to mark Zubeen’s 53rd birth anniversary. Residents of Tezpur’s Debojani area also cut a cake and offered prayers with dihanam seeking justice for the late musician.
Tezpur Aideu Mahila Samiti performed devotional songs at the Tezpur Court premises, while AASU’s Sonitpur district unit concluded its three-day programme with a human chain at Tezpur Court Chariali. Newly elected AASU vice-president Nitul Bora joined the protest as members demanded justice for Zubeen Garg, drawing wide public participation across the town.
