Tezpur, Nov 20:Five residents of Dhobokata village in Sonitpur district have been ordered to leave Assam within 24 hours after a Foreigners Tribunal declared them non-citizens under a post-Partition law still in force.
The District Magistrate’s office in Tezpur issued the directives on November 18 2025 against Hanufa, Amjad Ali, Mariyam Nessa, Fatema and Monowara. All five live under Jamugurihat police station. The orders invoke the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950, which permits the state to expel individuals identified as illegal immigrants.
Foreigners Tribunal No. 2 in Sonitpur delivered its findings on October 24 2025 in separate cases tied to references made on March 20 2006 by the Superintendent of Police (Border), Tezpur. The tribunal confirmed that each of the five is a foreigner and forwarded its opinion to the district authorities.
The order says their continued stay poses a risk to public interest and internal security. They have been told to exit India through routes in Dhubri, Sribhumi or South Salmara-Mankachar. District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das signed the notice and said non-compliance will lead to enforced removal under the Act.
