GUWAHATI, Nov 20: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya visited Dhemaji on Thursday and chaired a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office to assess flood protection measures and various development initiatives underway in the district.
District commissioner Rahul Suresh Javir presented a detailed report on Dhemaji’s flood preparedness, focusing on flood behaviour, socio-economic impacts on vulnerable communities, year-wise embankment performance and the status of ongoing schemes.
He also highlighted the initiatives of the Dhemaji Water Resources Division aimed at strengthening long-term resilience.
The Governor appreciated the district administration for its proactive approach to managing floods.
He took note of the work carried out by Central and State agencies in research, data collection and coordination with local authorities.
Acharya said that a comprehensive action plan is being prepared to find a sustainable and permanent solution to the district’s recurring flood issues.
He reviewed progress of several Raj Bhavan-led initiatives, including Governor Assam Amrit Sarovars, Sadbhavana Sangat and GAPPY.
Emphasising community engagement, he stressed the importance of arranging the broadcast of Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat at Amrit Sarovar sites to encourage public participation.
He also called for collaborative efforts in cleanliness drives, plantation work and Nasha-Mukti campaigns to build a progressive and socially responsible society.
Noting the changing river courses and dry riverbeds during lean seasons, the Governor suggested exploring their potential for eco-tourism.
The District Commissioner informed him about initiatives such as the Missing Youth Festival, Jiyadhal Eco-Tourism and night camping facilities, which have boosted local tourism and supported livelihoods through the growth of homestay networks.
After the review meeting, the Governor visited the Jiadhal River to inspect the closure works of the avulsion channel near the upstream of the Samarajan Bridge on the left bank.
