GUWAHATI, Nov 22: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday rejected the Congress party’s allegations of “outside voters” being brought into the state ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, calling the claims baseless and politically motivated.

Addressing the media after attending a cheque distribution programme under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhijan at Abhayeswari Higher Secondary and Multi-Purpose School in Abhayapuri, the Chief Minister said such narratives were an attempt to mislead the public for electoral gains.

Questioning the practicality of the allegations, Sarma remarked that unchecked migration would bring severe logistical and economic challenges. He added that similar rumours had previously been circulated during the CAA movement but had not materialised.

The Chief Minister also criticised the Congress for what he termed decades of administrative neglect when the party was in power. He stated that land ownership issues facing villagers today could have been resolved earlier had timely land titles been granted by previous governments.

During his address, Sarma hinted at the possibility of a new welfare scheme for journalists, noting that the government was considering ways to support members of the media community. He also announced that a new initiative, tentatively named the “Babu Scheme,” aimed at benefiting children, is expected to be launched from January 1, with detailed guidelines to be shared soon.

In a pointed political remark, the Chief Minister criticised South Abhayapuri MLA Pradip Kumar Sarkar, suggesting a lack of visible engagement with the public.

Commenting on recent changes in NCERT textbooks, Sarma welcomed the decision to remove references to historical figures such as Tipu Sultan and Babur, describing it as a positive step in reshaping historical narratives in school education.

The event in Abhayapuri saw a large turnout, with students, beneficiaries and local residents gathering in significant numbers to attend the ceremony and hear the Chief Minister’s address.
