The initiative is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to establish one high-tech bamboo nursery each in Golaghat, Nagaon and Biswanath districts to promote ethanol production from bamboo and support farmers.
Biswanath MLA Pramod Barthakur inaugurated the Seijosa nursery, the first of its kind in the state and briefed farmers on how to obtain bamboo seedlings and the benefits of cultivation. Spread over five hectares, the nursery is managed under the leadership of Dr Sumitra Das, DFO, Sonitpur District, Social Forestry Department and Dhimanshu Saikia, Forest Division Officer, Sonitpur District.
Dr Pranabjyoti Nath, Technology Officer at RRL, provided guidance on procuring seedlings and marketing mature bamboo through the center set up at Balipara. Experts Dr Kalyanjit Sarma and Debashish Sarma from the Assam Agriculture and Forestry Board elaborated on how bamboo cultivation can contribute to economic self-reliance while helping reduce air pollution.
The nursery is expected to benefit local farmers by providing quality bamboo seedlings and technical support, while contributing to the state’s larger goals of sustainable development and renewable energy production.
