DIPHU, Nov 24: Former militant leader Songjit Engti Kthar of the People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) on Sunday thanked Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang for taking steps to implement the 2021 Karbi Peace Agreement.
The Peace Agreement, signed on September 4, 2021, between the Centre, the Assam government and six Karbi militant organisations—including KLNLF, PDCK, UPLA and three factions of the KPLT—had committed to various measures for long-term peace and development in the region.

Addressing a press conference at Hotel Hambi, Kthar said the state Cabinet’s recent decision to create the Karbi Welfare Autonomous Council was in line with Clause 3.6 of the Accord.
The proposed council is meant for Karbis residing outside Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts.
“We have learned that the Bill for the new council will be introduced in the Winter Session on November 25,” he said.
Kthar expressed gratitude to the chief minister and the KAAC for their time-bound implementation of the Accord’s provisions.
“At the time of signing, they promised that all clauses would be implemented, and this is visible on the ground. We request that the remaining clauses also be taken up soon,” he said. Leaders of all six former militant groups were present at the press conference.
