GUWAHATI, Nov 25: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has undertaken extensive preparations to ensure safe train operations during the approaching foggy and inclement weather season. Following Railway Board guidelines, locomotives are being equipped with ‘Fog Safe Devices’ to help Loco Pilots identify signals and markers under low-visibility conditions, while automatic signalling systems are being upgraded to enhance reliability and safety during fog.
Infrastructure measures include ensuring adequate availability of detonators, lime-marking key track locations, repainting signal sighting boards and level crossing gates with luminous strips and installing LED-based flasher tail lamps on rear coaches. Retro-reflective STOP boards and other visibility-enhancing tools are being checked and reinforced across fog-prone sections.
Operational preparations include rationalising train movements to reduce congestion during low-visibility periods. Training and refresher courses for Loco Pilots, Assistant Loco Pilots and Guards are underway at Zonal and Supervisor Training Centres with special focus on fog operations. Crew changing points and locomotive links are being closely monitored to maintain punctuality and safety.
Visibility Test Objects (VTOs) are being installed or verified at all required stations, enabling Station Masters to assess fog intensity and deploy fog signalmen or detonators as necessary.
NFR assured passengers that all operational, technical and safety measures have been put in place to ensure safe and reliable travel during the foggy season and encouraged travelers to stay updated through official communication channels.
