MANGALDAI, Nov 26: Darrang Police had arrested a suspected jihadi, identified as Munsher Ali of West Kamarpara village under Kharupetia Police Station, for allegedly maintaining links with foreign terrorist outfits and planning attacks in Assam, said our correspondent on Wednesday.
Police sources said the accused had developed contacts with the Myanmar-based Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and certain jihadi networks operating from Bangladesh and Qatar.
He reportedly used social media and modern communication tools to stay in touch with these organisations.
Ali, who had been working in Tamil Nadu and returned home a few days ago, was suspected to be preparing for major attacks in Kharupetia and other locations in the state.
A case (No. 134/2025) has been registered under Sections 147, 148, 152 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, read with Section 39(2) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, on charges including waging war against India, criminal conspiracy, promoting enmity between groups and supporting a terrorist organisation.
The accused was produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody. Multiple agencies are interrogating him, and the scope of the investigation has been widened.
Police described Ali, who is educated below matriculation level and earns his livelihood through farming and cow dung trading, as an individual radicalised through online jihadi networks. Further details are awaited.
