HOJAI, Dec 3: The Lok Jagran Manch, in front of the District Commissioner’s Office at Srimanta Sankardev Nagar in Hojai district, organised a massive sit-in on Tuesday morning, drawing hundreds of men and women demanding an end to communal violence and atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
Hundreds of participants held placards demanding justice and immediate action.
The event saw significant participation from prominent leaders and organisations. Along with hundreds of demonstrators, local MLA Ramkrishna Ghosh, Lumding MLA Sibu Mishra, ex-MLA Shiladitya Dev, Habib Mohammad Choudhury, and advocate Amarjyoti Saikia, accompanied by other eminent personalities, marked their attendance to showcase their protest against the Bangladesh government.
The sit-in underscored growing concerns over communal tensions in the region and called for both international and local efforts to address the issue. The Lok Jagran Manch, which has been vocal on matters of social justice, vowed to continue its efforts to raise awareness and press for action until the violence is halted.
At the culmination of the protest, a memorandum was submitted to Prof Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh, via the district commissioner of Hojai district. In the memorandum, an urgent appeal was made to take immediate steps to end the violence, protect the rights of minority communities, and ensure justice for the victims of communal atrocities.
Our Dibrugarh correspondent adds: The Lok Jagran Manch of Dibrugarh on Tuesday organised a protest against attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, including assaults on ISKCON temples.
A march was held from Chowkidingee playground to the District Commissioner’s Office, with protesters holding placards and banners.
The protesters called the attacks intolerable, terming them an assault on the global Hindu community, and urged the Indian government to intervene and stop the persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh.
“We have staged a protest against the Bangladesh government for filing false cases against Hindus. We demand the Bangladesh government stop atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh,” said a member of Lok Jagran Manch.
He added, “Our main demand is to stop atrocities on Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. We urge all Hindus to unite and raise their voices against the crimes and atrocities committed against the Hindu population living in Bangladesh.”
The protesters submitted a memorandum to the chief adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, through the Dibrugarh district commissioner.
Bangladesh’s minority Hindus, who constitute only about 8 percent of the 170 million population, have faced over 200 attacks in more than 50 districts since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5.
Our Nagaon correspondent adds: Lok Jagran Manch, Nagaon—a socio-cultural organisation—staged a massive protest rally in Nagaon on Tuesday against the atrocities committed against Hindus as well as other religious minorities in the neighboring country, Bangladesh.
The rally, which started from Nehrubali Field, passed through the main streets of Nagaon town, culminating at the District Commissioner’s Office.
Prominent leaders, including MLA Rupak Sarma, Ambika Majumdar, and Simanta Bara, addressed the gathering, condemning the attacks on Hindus, temples, and saints in Bangladesh. They demanded that the Bangladesh government ensure the safety and security of Hindus and put an end to the destruction of temples and monasteries there.
The protest rally was attended by various organisations and individuals from different walks of life. A memorandum was submitted to the district commissioner, Nagaon, to be forwarded to the Bangladesh government, urging immediate action to stop the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
Earlier, a protest rally was also organised at Nagaon’s Nehrubali Field, where prominent dignitaries from various fields participated and spoke against the ongoing atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh since the rule of the caretaker government under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The protest rally was mentored by Brajen Kakoti, the vice-president of Lok Jagran Manch, Nagaon.
Our Jorhat correspondent adds: The Jorhat district unit of Lok Jagran Manch took out a rally to protest against the ongoing atrocities committed by a section of Bangladeshis against the religious minorities in Bangladesh.
The rally, led by the former Congress MLA who is now in the BJP, Rana Goswami, Jorhat district president Hemanta Kalita, and several other BJP leaders, took out the protest rally from the Jorhat Stadium to the District Commissioner’s Office, where a memorandum addressed to Muhammed Yunus, chief adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh, was submitted through the Jorhat district commissioner.
The memorandum stated: “We, on behalf of Lok Jagran Manch, express our strong resentment against the atrocities being committed by Islamic extremists, including attacks, killings, looting, arson, and inhumane persecution of women, etc., against Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh. We are deeply concerned about the religious minorities of Bangladesh and believe that they have the right to live with dignity and peace, free from arbitrary interference by the government of Bangladesh and any Islamic extremists.”
Current media reports reflect the dire situation of Bangladesh’s religious minorities, including spiritual leaders, particularly Hindu sadhus and sants. However, the current Government of Bangladesh and other concerned agencies have remained silent, failing to take necessary steps to stop these incidents.
The current government of Bangladesh’s oppression of peaceful democratic rallies by Hindu minorities, who are seeking self-protection against these atrocities, is unjust and contrary to human and democratic values. The arrest of ISKCON sanyasi Pujya Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das ji by the current Bangladesh government, while he was leading a peaceful protest by Hindu minorities, is unfair and undemocratic, the memorandum further said.
“At this critical juncture, we urge you to take immediate action to stop the atrocities being committed against Hindus and other minorities and release Pujya Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das of ISKCON from prison. We believe that you will take prompt action to stop the gross human rights violations against Bangladesh’s religious minorities and take necessary steps to protect their lives, dignity, and rights, including those of women, children, religious places, and spiritual leaders such as Hindu sadhus and sants,” the Lok Jagran Manch stated.
Rana Goswami said that India had always maintained cordial relations with Bangladesh, and after the new government came into existence, atrocities on religious minorities had begun, which was condemnable and required action to be taken.
