Chandrakanta Sandikei Bhawan centenary on Dec 2–3

Two-day celebration to honour legacy of Sabha pioneers and regional literary heritage

JORHAT, Nov 29: The centenary celebration of Chandrakanta Sandikei Bhawan—built in Jorhat of the erstwhile undivided Sivasagar district under the supervision of then Asam Sahitya Sabha General Secretary Sarat Chandra Goswami with donations from philanthropist Radhakanta Sandikei—will be held on December 2–3 at Zubeen Garg Kshetra.

Supported by the district Sahitya Sabhas of Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat and Majuli, as well as branch Sabhas and people from all communities and faiths, the two-day event will begin with the hoisting of the main flag and one hundred accompanying flags under the leadership of Sabha President Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami.

Tributes will then be paid at Zubeen Kshetra by Jorhat District Sahitya Sabha President Mahendra Hazarika, former President Nalini Bala Hazarika and former President Bhaba Goswami, followed by floral homage at the residence of Radhakanta Sandikei.

Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami will unveil a statue of Sarat Chandra Goswami, the Sabha’s first General Secretary, on the Sabha premises.

The venue will be inaugurated by Kumud Kochari, Working President of the Celebration Committee, while Jorhat Deputy Commissioner Joy Shivani will flag off the coordination procession with participation from presidents of various tribal literary bodies of Assam.

From 12:30 PM, the gathering of Life Members, Benefactor Members and Patron Members, presided over by Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami, will be inaugurated by Dibrugarh University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jiten Hazarika.

Nagaon University Vice-Chancellor Dr Hitesh Deka and Assam Women’s University Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajanta Borgohain Rajkonwar will attend as distinguished guests.

The evening cultural session will be inaugurated by artist Jayanta Nath.

On the second day at 10 AM, the discussion session Asam Sahitya Sabha Patrika: One Hundred Years will be inaugurated by cultural researcher Dr Anil Saikia and presided over by Dr Basanta Kumar Goswami.

Speakers include Dr Pallabi Deka Buzarbaruah of Dibrugarh University, former Patrika editor Dr Ram Chandra Deka and Dr Jyotishman Das of Tezpur University. From 12:30 PM, the open session will be inaugurated by Jagannath Barooah University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jyotiprasad Saikia and presided over by the Sabha President.

Invited guests include retired Sahitya Akademi Secretary Dr K Srinivas Rao and former Sabha Presidents Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora, Dr Kuladhar Saikia and Dr Suryakanta Hazarika. Assam Government Minister Kaushik Roy will attend as a special guest.
