Guwahati, Dec 02: Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan on Tuesday, December 2, flagged the simmering unrest at Tezpur University, placing the issue before Parliament and calling for swift intervention to restore order at the Assam-based central institution.
Bhuyan told the Upper House that the university, created in 1994 under the Assam Accord, has been under sustained protests and sit-ins for months. Students have been pressing allegations of procedural lapses and decisions taken without proper scrutiny.
He said the absence of the Vice-Chancellor from the campus for nearly two months has fuelled discontent and disrupted routine academic work. Bhuyan noted that claims of irregularities, including questions over official approvals, have circulated widely.
He argued that the head of the institution cannot distance himself from the campus during a crisis and said the learning environment cannot remain unstable. Bhuyan urged the government to ensure that VC appointments follow a consensus-based approach without external pressure.
He asked the Education Minister to act without delay and push the university back to normal operations.
