GUWAHATI, Dec 10: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday dedicated the newly built Jatiya Swahid Smarak to the martyrs of the Assam Movement, marking a fresh chapter in the state’s long fight to protect its identity. The memorial, whose foundation stone was laid on Dec 10, 2019 during the tenure of former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, now stands as a reminder of the lives lost in one of Assam’s most defining political struggles.
At the inaugural event, Sarma outlined the government’s plan to turn the site into a centre of learning and remembrance. A 500-seat auditorium is already under construction, and he announced the proposal for a digital library that will chronicle the Assam Movement along with nearly 5,000 years of Assamese cultural and civilisational history. He said the effort aims to give future generations a deeper understanding of Assam’s journey and identity.
Calling Dec 10 a “holy day” for the people of Assam, Sarma urged residents to take a collective oath to safeguard the land and rights of the indigenous population. Issuing a strong appeal, he warned people against selling land to unknown individuals or engaging unfamiliar workers in businesses and agricultural activities.
The Chief Minister stressed that protecting Assam’s cultural roots and territorial integrity must remain a shared responsibility, adding that the memorial should inspire citizens to stay committed to the values the martyrs fought for.
