Ashok Singhal recalled the Assam Movement (1979–1985)

District-level programme honours 860 martyrs, with family felicitations

TEZPUR, Dec 11: Along with the rest of the state, the Sonitpur district administration on Wednesday observed “Swaheed Divas 2025” at Church Field, Tezpur. Assam’s Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Ashok Singhal, graced the district-level programme as Chief Guest. A live telecast of the central programme held at West Boragaon, Guwahati was arranged, allowing the audience and invited guests at Church Field to witness the ceremony simultaneously.

The event commenced with Minister Ashok Singhal, Tezpur MLA Prithviraj Rabha, District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha, AMTRON Vice-Chairman Ritubaran Sarma, Tezpur Municipal Board Chairman Ramen Tamuli, Tezpur Development Authority Chairman Biswadev Bhattacharjya and other dignitaries offering floral tributes and lighting ceremonial lamps at the symbolic Saheed Bedi in homage to the martyrs of the Assam Movement and those from Sonitpur. This was followed by the live telecast and a welcome address by District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das.

Speaking as Chief Guest, Minister Singhal recalled the Assam Movement (1979–1985) and paid heartfelt respects to the 860 martyrs who laid down their lives to protect the identity, culture, land and resources of the indigenous people, making special mention of martyrs from Sonitpur district.

The cultural segment included a performance of the song “Saheed Pranamo Tomak” by students, teachers and artistes, followed by a felicitation ceremony honouring martyrs’ family members. The Assam Police Pipe Band performed the national anthem and ceremonial pieces at the start and conclusion of the event. The programme was attended by members of martyrs’ families, AASU leaders, representatives of various organisations, government officials, students, teachers, artistes and media personnel.
