Guwahati , Dec 22: The murder case linked to cultural figure Zubeen Garg formally entered the trial phase on Monday, as proceedings began before the Sessions Judge during the first hearing.
The matter is now set to be heard in full by the Sessions Court after the judge took cognisance, marking the transition from preliminary procedures to trial. Advocate Dhrubajyoti Das represented the accused during the hearing.
According to sources, bail pleas for Garg’s two bodyguards are expected to be moved later in the day. The bodyguards, it may be noted, have not been booked under murder charges. Under the sections applied to them, the Special Investigation Team was mandated to submit the chargesheet within 60 days. The SIT, however, filed it after 84 days, combining their case with that of five other accused.
Legal observers point out that the delay in filing the chargesheet may weigh in favour of the bodyguards while the court considers their bail applications. Meanwhile, there is speculation that the two bodyguards could be formally shown arrested in a separate case, a step that could further entangle their legal status.
Separately, the Supervisory Cell is likely to move the court on Monday seeking approval to make additional arrests in connection with the case. With the case now firmly before the Sessions Court, the trial is expected to gather momentum in the days ahead.
