GUWAHATI, Dec 22: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Monday attended the first convocation ceremony of Krishnaguru Adhyatmic Viswavidyalay at Nasatra in Barpeta district, where he conferred degrees on graduating students in the presence of Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
Addressing the students, the Governor paid reverential salutations to Krishnaguru Prabhu and expressed happiness at being part of what he described as a sacred and historic occasion.
He recalled that Krishnaguru Prabhu established the Krishnaguru Sevashram on the same land as a model of selfless service to humanity, founded on the ideals of Krishnaguru Ek-Naam Dharma rooted in monotheistic Sanatan Dharma.
Acharya said the institutions run by the Sevashram are unique for seamlessly integrating academic learning with spiritual education.
He noted that Krishnaguru Adhyatmic Viswavidyalay imparts value-based education aimed at producing responsible, ethical and socially conscious citizens.
Calling convocation an unforgettable milestone in a student’s life, the Governor said it celebrates years of dedication and perseverance by both students and teachers. He congratulated the graduating students and also felicitated eminent Indian classical dance maestro Jatin Goswami, who was conferred an honorary degree.
Reflecting on the life and legacy of Krishnaguru Prabhu, the Governor said every initiative of the Sevashram—from its establishment in 1974 with a vision of world peace to the creation of multiple educational institutions—was inspired by human welfare, spiritual awakening and global harmony.
He remarked that material progress without spiritual consciousness remains incomplete and temporary.
The Governor observed that the university is contributing skilled and value-oriented human resources through disciplines such as physiotherapy, nursing and pharmacy, all guided by compassion and a spirit of service.
He added that under the National Education Policy, the university is promoting multidisciplinary education while emphasising personality development, ethical values, innovation and spiritual growth.
Recalling ancient centres of learning such as Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramashila, Ratnagiri and Sharadapeeth, Shri Acharya said Assam also holds a distinguished place in India’s intellectual history, noting that Acharya Shilabhadra of Assam served as a renowned teacher at Nalanda.
He described spirituality as the essence of Indian culture, stating that education must transcend livelihood and become a guiding philosophy of life. Citing the maxim “Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye”, he said true knowledge liberates, and expressed satisfaction that Krishnaguru Adhyatmic Viswavidyalay embodies this ideal by blending education with spirituality and service.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks during Pariksha Pe Charcha held recently in Guwahati, the Governor said education is a powerful instrument of nation-building and human upliftment.
He added that Assam is progressing steadily in sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, culture and youth empowerment, and that spiritually grounded and educated youth will be key to the state’s future.
The convocation ceremony was attended by Vice Chancellor Dr Mohan Chandra Kalita, Chairperson of Krishnaguru Foundation Trust Kuntala Patowary Goswami, members of the Academic Council, faculty members and other dignitaries.
