APSCS&T observes National Mathematics Day at AP Science Centre

ITANAGAR, Dec 22: The Arunachal Pradesh State Council for Science and Technology (APSCS&T) on Monday observed National Mathematics Day at the Arunachal Pradesh Science Centre, marking the 138th birth anniversary of legendary mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

The celebration paid tribute to Ramanujan’s extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series and continued fractions, achieved despite his limited formal training in pure mathematics.

As part of the celebrations, APSCS&T organised a series of academic and outreach activities throughout the month.

A lecture programme held on December 6 at Government Secondary School, Mani, featured Dr Neelabja Chatterjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, NERIST, who spoke on the importance of mathematics in daily life.

Another lecture was organised on December 11 at Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV), Nirjuli, where Dr Dakjum Eshi, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, Rajiv Gandhi University, delivered a talk titled “Mathematics Is Not a Monster: From Fear to Fun Through Puzzles and Patterns.”

In addition, competitions including drawing, quiz, extempore speech and model-making were conducted on December 16, 2025, in collaboration with VKV, Itanagar.

Around 70 students from various schools across the Itanagar Capital Region participated.

The winners were felicitated during the main programme on December 22.

In the quiz competition, Lomra Tacho and Tai Asha of Government Secondary School, Itanagar, secured first place.

Rakli B Bagra of VKV, Itanagar, won the model-making competition. Aryan Parasar of VKV, Chimpu, and Tai Jarma of Ramakrishna Public School, Itanagar, secured first and second positions respectively in the extempore speech competition, while Jigyasha Das of VKV, Itanagar, won the drawing competition.

The main programme commenced at 10 am with ceremonial lamp lighting and floral tributes to Ramanujan.

Dr Arun Joram, Lecturer, RGGP, Itanagar, attended as chief guest, while Dr Pakngu Lombi, Deputy Director, APSCS&T, presided over the event. Mrs Gem Peri Tayeng, Education Officer, Arunachal Pradesh Science Centre, was also present.

Cash prizes, mementos and certificates were distributed to the winners by the dignitaries.

The programme concluded with a Taramandal show for students, adding an interactive and educational dimension to the National Mathematics Day celebrations.
