NAGAON, Dec 23: Young writer and columnist Gautam Sarmah, faculty member of the Department of History at Rabindranath Tagore University has been selected for the prestigious ‘Yuva Lekhak Award for 2025 celebrations organised by the Government of Assam. He is among 818 young writers below the age of 40 selected from across the state for their notable literary contributions.
The award recognises creative writing in multiple languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and indigenous languages such as Mising, Karbi and Nepali. Sarmah’s selection has been warmly welcomed by the people of his hometown Dhemaji and by the academic fraternity of Rabindranath Tagore University.
In a special message, Vice-Chancellor Professor Manabendra Dutta Choudhury congratulated the awardee, while Registrar (i/c) cum Academic Registrar Dr Sandip Ratna described him as a matter of pride for the university.
Gautam Sarmah has authored six books and written over 500 articles on history, nature and tourism. His writings appear regularly in leading newspapers and magazines including The Assam Tribune, The Sentinel, The Eastern Chronicle, Asomiya Pratidin, Niyomiya Barta, Amar Asom, Dainik Asam, Sadin, Satsori and others. The award ceremony will be held on December 24 at 4:00 PM at the Assam Book Fair, Khanapara, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will felicitate the awardees with Rs 25,000 each.
