BJP expresses concern over Karbi Anglong unrest, appeals for peace

GUWAHATI, Dec 24: The Assam Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday expressed concern over the violent situation that has prevailed for the past few days in Kheroni and Donkamokam areas of West Karbi Anglong district and appealed to all sections to maintain peace and harmony.

State BJP president Dilip Saikia urged residents of West Karbi Anglong, including members of the Karbi community and other communities, to cooperate with the authorities in maintaining law and order.

Stating that violence cannot provide a solution to any issue, he called upon all concerned parties to respond positively to the three-party talks proposed by the state government.

Saikia said that chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been closely monitoring the situation and is making continuous efforts to restore normalcy in the violence-hit region.

Acting on the Chief Minister’s instructions, Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and state minister Ranoj Pegu have been deputed to Karbi Anglong to hold discussions with various stakeholders, he said.

The BJP leader also alleged that anti-Assam and anti-national forces were making repeated attempts to disturb peace and stability in the state.

Referring to recent incidents, Saikia claimed there were indications of a conspiracy by certain anti-social and anti-Assam elements to destabilise the state and urged all concerned to foil such attempts.

Expressing condolences, Saikia conveyed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives during the unrest over the past three days and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
