GUWAHATI, Dec 25: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jorhat, on Monday organised a Kisan Mahotsav-cum-Exhibition at its campus to observe National Farmers’ Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Choudhury Charan Singh, widely regarded as a champion of farmers’ welfare.
The event was inaugurated by Shri Pabitra Margherita, Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, who attended as the chief guest. He was joined by several dignitaries, including MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from the Kaziranga Parliamentary Constituency and Santanu Tamuli, Director of the Assam Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation.
Senior officials and scientists from Assam Agricultural University also participated, notably Dr Sanjoy Chetia, Director of Research (Agriculture), and Dr Manoranjan Neog, Director of Extension Education. Representatives from the banking sector, NABARD, the Assam Rice Research Institute, district agriculture offices, and research bodies such as NEIST and RFRI were also present. The programme drew considerable media attention, with All India Radio, Jorhat, among those covering the event.
As part of the celebrations, 16 progressive farmers from Jorhat and Majuli districts, three agriculture-focused NGOs, and three schools were honoured for their contributions to the farming sector. A book titled “Empowering Rural Assam through Livestock-Based Livelihood” was released on the occasion. The Union Minister also inaugurated a bird house under an agrotourism initiative and a museum aimed at benefiting farmers and other stakeholders.
A major attraction was the large-scale exhibition featuring 30 stalls from agriculture and allied sector companies, government departments, farmer producer companies, nurseries, NGOs, self-help groups and others. The stalls showcased modern farm technologies, machinery, value-added products and climate-resilient practices.
A horticultural competition was also organised, with farmers competing across five categories, including fruits, leafy vegetables and cucurbits.
Altogether, 529 farmers, farm women, rural youth and extension workers took part. The programme concluded with a collective pledge to promote scientific, sustainable and income-oriented agriculture across the region.
