SIVASAGAR, Jan 1: Sivasagar, renowned for its historical splendours and monuments of the Ahom era, was swarmed by thousands of picnickers from different parts of the State on the last day of 2025, as people gathered to celebrate the eve of the New Year.
Revelers thronged major heritage and tourism sites including the historic Sivadoul, Rangghar, Talatal Ghar, Kareng Ghar at Gargaon, the UNESCO-listed Charaideo Maidams, Jaysagar tank area, Pohugarh’s unique water body known for swarms of migratory aquatic birds, the Desangmukh ecosystem and riverfront, Dikhowmukh Ramkha Pith and Ajan Peer Dargah, the Dihingmukh Brahmaputra confluence, as well as the sprawling Panidihing Bird Sanctuary.
With massive improvements in road communication and infrastructure, the flow of tourists, both domestic and international, has been increasing significantly in recent times, making Sivasagar one of the most visited destinations during festive seasons.
The Archaeological Survey of India, which looks after major historical monuments such as Rangghar, Talatal Ghar, Charaideo Maidam and Kareng Ghar, earned lakhs of rupees during the festival season. Entry tickets are priced at Rs 25 for offline purchase and Rs 20 for online booking. However, most students from rural schools do not possess Android mobile phones and are therefore compelled to buy offline tickets at a higher price compared to the elite section.
Meanwhile, it has been alleged that the ASI has stopped spending funds on beautification and gardening of the front yards of monuments such as Rangghar and Talatal Ghar, despite the substantial revenue generated during the tourist season.
