Tezpur, Jan 7: Tezpur plunged into mourning following the demise of internationally acclaimed photographer Nalini Baruah, a towering figure in Assam’s cultural and artistic landscape. The 95-year-old artist breathed his last at around 8:30 pm on Tuesday at his residence in Barahalia, Tezpur.
Baruah, a recipient of the Assam government’s prestigious Bishnu Rabha Award, had been undergoing treatment for respiratory ailments over the past week. Though his condition had shown signs of improvement, he passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy etched through the lens of creativity.
Born on April 22, 1931, Nalini Baruah devoted his life to photography, transforming moments of nature and human emotion into timeless art. From Tezpur, he rose to global recognition, becoming the only photographer from Assam whose works were published in an American photography journal.
Even in his nineties, Baruah remained remarkably active—camera in hand, driving himself to events and studios, forever in pursuit of the perfect frame. His photographs featured in numerous national and international exhibitions and earned wide acclaim from art lovers worldwide.
Following his demise, Tezpur MLA Prithviraj Rabha contacted Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora to ensure the last rites are conducted with full state honours. Cultural organisations, artists, writers, administrators and citizens across Sonitpur district expressed deep condolences, remembering him as a refined artist and a revered public figure.
Nalini Baruah is survived by his son Madhurya Baruah, daughter-in-law, married daughter, grandchildren and countless admirers. His last rites will be performed on Wednesday, his son confirmed.
