KOKRAJHAR, Jan 8: An awareness-cum-sensitisation programme on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016 was held on Thursday at the District Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Kokrajhar. The programme was organised by the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Assam in collaboration with the District Administration to sensitise officials about the rights, entitlements and welfare measures for persons with disabilities.
The programme was attended by Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Assam, Sushama Hazarika, District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty, along with ADCs, heads of departments and other district-level officials. Emphasising inclusion, the District Commissioner highlighted the responsibility of officials and citizens to uphold the rights of persons with disabilities and eliminate social stigma, while also citing initiatives such as home voting facilities.
Resource person Rajeev Bharadwaj from the Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Government of India, briefed participants on key provisions of the RPWD Act, 2016, including the expansion of recognised disabilities from seven to twenty-one. He stressed the need for disability-friendly infrastructure, inclusive education and timely issuance of disability certificates to enable access to benefits such as the UDID card.
