AAU targets production of 5,000 quintals of paddy seeds in upcoming season

JORHAT, Jan 9: Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has set an ambitious target of producing 5,000 quintals of paddy seeds in the forthcoming agricultural season.

The target was announced by AAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Bidyut Chandan Deka while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the two-day Farmers’ Fair, being held on January 9 and 10 at the ICR Farm of the varsity campus at Borbheta here.

Dr Deka, who presided over the inaugural function, also advocated the adoption of two- or three-tier cropping systems on a commercial scale to strengthen Assam’s agricultural economy.

Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath Barooah University, Professor (Dr) Jyoti Prasad Saikia, who attended the programme as the chief guest, said farmers play a crucial role in the country’s development process.

He noted that organising such fairs provides farmers with an effective platform to upgrade their skills and modernise agricultural practices.

Emphasising the need to accord due importance and dignity to farmers, Dr Saikia said that experience enhances efficiency in people’s lives and stressed the collective responsibility of building a healthy society.

Chief General Manager of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Regional Office, Guwahati, Loken Das, AAU Director (Research–Agriculture) Dr Sanjay Kumar Chetia, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Dr Prasanna Kumar Pathak, also addressed the gathering.

Earlier, AAU Director (Extension Education) Dr Manoranjan Neog delivered the welcome address.

The Farmers’ Fair features interaction programmes between farmers and scientists, training sessions for farmers, meetings of agricultural entrepreneurs and seed producers, and specialised interactions with mushroom farmers as part of its two-day schedule.
