KOKRAJHAR, Jan 11: In view of the prevailing law and order situation following the alleged incident of sexual harassment involving a mentally challenged girl in Kokrajhar on Saturday, a peace meeting was convened on Sunday at the Conference Hall of the District Commissioner’s Office.
The meeting was chaired by District Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty in the presence of Akshat Garg, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kokrajhar; Circle Officers, district officials and representatives of political parties, social organisations, student bodies and leading citizens of the district.
Addressing the gathering, DC Chakravarty stated that the district administration is closely monitoring the situation and has taken necessary measures to ensure public peace and tranquillity. He informed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted under the supervision of a DSP to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure justice through due process of law. He also assured that vulnerable areas are being identified for installation of CCTV cameras and street lights. Emphasising unity and harmony, the DC appealed to all sections of society to repose faith in democracy and its institutions and to work collectively for the development of Kokrajhar, home to multiple communities living together as one family.
During the meeting, the Circle Officer presented the factual sequence of events related to the incident and the steps taken by the administration to prevent any escalation of tension. SSP Akshat Garg highlighted the issue of rumour-mongering and misinformation, warning against attempts by anti-social elements to provoke public sentiment through unverified information. He urged citizens to verify facts before believing or sharing any news.
Participants unanimously stressed the need to maintain peace, unity and communal harmony and resolved to cooperate with the district administration in ensuring law and order. The administration appealed to the public to remain calm and support efforts to maintain stability in the district.
