GUWAHATI, Jan 15: Assam’s railway infrastructure has witnessed a major transformation over the past decade, emerging as a key driver of connectivity and economic growth in eastern and North-Eastern India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At the centre of this shift is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the world’s largest railway station redevelopment initiative, which goes beyond routine modernisation to reimagine stations as accessible, future-ready and regionally rooted public spaces.

With over 1,300 stations identified nationwide, the scheme focuses on improved passenger amenities, Divyangjan-friendly access, modern waiting areas, digital information systems and architecture inspired by local heritage.

Assam has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the scheme in the Northeast.

Of the 60 stations selected across the region, 50 are located in Assam, with a total investment of Rs 2,101 crore.

The redevelopments span major cities and smaller towns alike, ensuring balanced infrastructure growth across the state.

Key stations including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Silchar, Lumding, Tinsukia, New Bongaigaon, Jorhat Town, Kokrajhar, Rangiya and Diphu are undergoing comprehensive upgrades.

Haibargaon station, inaugurated in May 2025, became the first completed Amrit Bharat station in Assam and set new standards in passenger facilities and design.

The redevelopment works include new station buildings, upgraded platforms, improved circulation, digital signage, modern waiting halls and enhanced accessibility, while incorporating Assam’s cultural elements.

Passenger services have expanded with the installation of lifts and escalators, widespread Wi-Fi connectivity and strengthened safety measures, including AI-enabled CCTV surveillance and intrusion detection systems along elephant corridors.

Officials said the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme marks a shift from incremental upgrades to transformative infrastructure development, positioning railway stations as centres of commerce and connectivity.

The initiative is seen as strengthening regional economies, enhancing mobility and reinforcing Assam’s role as the gateway to the North-East while contributing to national integration.
